WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Dynamic Self Defense International

The name "Dynamic Self Defense" was chosen for several reasons. First, while we incorporate many techniques from oriental martial arts, Dynamic Self Defense is not based on oriental culture.  The training system is designed to be multicultural, so the name needed to reflect no specific culture.  The name Dynamic Self Defense is further significant because the system embraces the use of modern technology and ingenuity towards the improvement of the arts and the ideals of its ancient predecessors.  Using a scientific approach, we select methods and techniques from many different styles in order to form an efficient system of self-defense that can be practiced by the broadest possible spectrum of the population.

For example, our standard striking and blocking skills are derived from arts such as Choi Kwang Do, Kali, Boxing, and Muay Thai, etc.  Our close range striking skills include additional techniques from American military hand-to-hand combat training.  Our falling and throwing techniques also come from American military training, as well as Judo, Jiu Jitsu, and Aikido.  Our grappling and control training adds techniques from Greco-Roman wrestling, American Police Pressure-Point Control Tactics, and street fighting.

Since our system draws from many different martial art styles, it was important that our name not favor any one in particular.  It was equally important that we not imply that we have developed a completely new style of fighting skills.  Rather, we have created some new skills, and combined them with a large collection of the best techniques of other styles.  The result is a modern, unique, comprehensive program of self-defense training.
